Ms. Apell, 7th grade ELASS, Advisory

Welcome to 7th grade ELASS  class.  I will be your 7th grade guide to the wonderful world of English and social studies this year.

7th grade ELA/SS are focused on social justice issues.

In ELA, there are several readings in the text that are engaging and of interest to our students.

We will also be focusing on 2 novels; A Midwife's Apprentice and The Giver

A Midwife's Apprentice
The Midwife's Apprentice is a children's novel by Karen Cushman. It tells of how a homeless girl becomes a midwife's apprentice—and establishes a name and a place in the world, and learns to hope and overcome failure. This novel won the John Newbery Medal in 1996..

The Giver
The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas.

In social studies, we will be traveling the medieval world beginning in Europe and moving into the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, China, Japan, and the Americas.

The ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS is " How did distant regions of the world become interconnected through medieval and early modern times."-TCI

There are 6 subtopics; Belief systems, rise of empires, growth and change in societies, interconnectedness of societies, development of political institutions and ideas, and human environment interactions.
